Description
The Advocate Spot-On for Dogs 55-88 lbs (25-40 kg), manufactured by Elanco, is the largest single-tube variant in the Advocate for Dogs range and is formulated for large-breed dogs between 25 and 40 kg. Each pipette contains imidacloprid at 400 mg and moxidectin at 100 mg, delivering a dose concentration scaled to the body mass of dogs in this bracket. For dogs exceeding 40 kg, the appropriate dose should be achieved by using a combination of pipettes to ensure a minimum dose of 0.1 ml/kg body weight is administered. Dogs in the 25-40 kg range receive one tube monthly, applied to the skin according to the product instructions, providing protection against fleas, heartworm, intestinal nematodes, and ectoparasites without oral administration.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 55 to 88 lbs (25 to 40 kg), from 7 weeks of age.
Indications / Coverage
For dogs suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections:
- Flea treatment and prevention: Eradicates adult fleas (Ctenocephalides) through contact action on the skin and suppresses flea larval development in the surrounding environment, which curtails the progression of Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD).
- Flea tapeworm risk reduction: Continuous flea suppression severs the transmission route of Dipylidium caninum, as tapeworm larvae depend on flea ingestion to reach the dog’s intestinal tract.
- Heartworm prevention: Moxidectin intercepts Dirofilaria immitis larvae at the L3 and L4 stages, clearing them from tissue before they can establish in the pulmonary vasculature.
- Oesophageal worm prevention: Halts the establishment of Spirocerca lupi, a nematode that produces granulomatous lesions in the oesophageal wall when left uncontrolled.
- Roundworm treatment and control: Active against larval (L4), immature adult (L5), and adult Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina residing in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Hookworm treatment and control: Active against larval (L4), immature adult (L5), and adult stages of Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, and Uncinaria stenocephala.
- Whipworm treatment: Resolves intestinal infections caused by Trichuris vulpis.
- Generalised demodicosis treatment: Controls proliferation of Demodex canis mites responsible for demodectic skin disease.
- Sarcoptic mange treatment: Eliminates burrowing Sarcoptes scabiei mites from affected skin.
- Ear mite treatment: Clears Otodectes cynotis infestations from the ear canal.
- Lice treatment: Addresses infestations of Trichodectes canis and Linognathus setosus (biting and sucking lice) for up to 6 weeks.
Key Benefits
The pharmacological properties and labeled claims specific to Advocate Spot-On for Dogs 55-88 lbs are outlined below:
- Large-breed dosing precision: The blue tube delivers imidacloprid and moxidectin at concentrations calibrated for dogs between 25 and 40 kg, ensuring that large-breed dogs receive accurate dosing in a single pipette rather than combining smaller variants.
- All-in-one parasite coverage: Fleas, heartworm, five categories of intestinal worms, ear mites, two forms of mange, and lice fall within the spectrum of one monthly application, which consolidates what would otherwise require multiple separate treatments.
- Flea kill without biting: Imidacloprid disperses through the skin’s lipid layer and coat, destroying fleas through nervous system disruption on contact. Large dogs with dense coats benefit from this mechanism because efficacy does not depend on the parasite taking a blood meal.
- 20-minute flea onset: Fleas contacting the treated skin die within 20 minutes, and feeding behaviour stops within 3 to 5 minutes of exposure, which provides rapid population knockdown during heavy infestations common in larger outdoor dogs.
- Consistent 30-day duration: One application sustains protection for a full month across every labeled indication, allowing a single calendar date to govern retreatment for all covered parasites.
- Larval-to-adult worm control: Moxidectin reaches gastrointestinal nematodes at L4 larval, L5 immature adult, and adult stages, and eliminates heartworm larvae at L3 and L4, intercepting parasites at multiple developmental phases in a single dose.
- Topical route for large dogs: Dogs in the 25-40 kg bracket that refuse oral chewables, regurgitate tablets, or have gastrointestinal sensitivities receive equivalent multi-parasite protection through a spot-on formulation that bypasses the digestive system entirely.
- Resilience to water exposure: Swimming, rain, and bathing do not compromise efficacy once the solution has dried at the application site, though soap-free shampoo is required when washing between monthly doses.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Intended solely for external use on animals. Prevent contact with eyes, skin, and clothing while handling. Wash hands with soap and water without delay after completing application. Ensure children cannot access the product, and keep it separated from all food, beverages, and animal feed.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Do not administer Advocate for Dogs 55-88 lbs orally. This blue variant is designated for dogs weighing 25 to 40 kg that are at least 7 weeks old. Applying it to dogs outside this bracket delivers an incorrect imidacloprid and moxidectin concentration. Dogs that are sick, debilitated, or underweight require careful assessment before treatment. Advocate’s safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been conclusively determined, making veterinary consultation essential before treating pregnant or nursing dogs. Transient neurological signs, specifically ataxia and muscle tremor, have been documented in very rare cases. If signs persist following application, contact a veterinarian. For dogs exceeding 40 kg, apply two blue tubes with the dose split across multiple sites as directed on the label.
Possible Side Effects
Keep a close watch on your dog for several hours after applying Advocate Spot-On.
Adverse events are infrequent when the blue tube is applied correctly to a dog within the 25-40 kg bracket. The product label records the following:
- Site-specific hair loss: Temporary thinning or loss of hair where the solution was applied has been observed occasionally. Regrowth occurs without intervention and is typically a one-time occurrence.
- Neurological responses: Ataxia and muscle tremor are documented as very rare. When they do occur, these signs are generally transient and self-limiting.
- Localised discomfort: Brief scratching or restlessness at the application site may follow dosing. This behaviour tends to subside once the solution has been absorbed.
If any reaction persists beyond 24 hours or intensifies, discontinue treatment and arrange a veterinary consultation. Elanco can be contacted directly for product-specific safety information.
