Description
Interceptor Spectrum Tasty Chews for Dogs 50-100 Lbs (22-45 Kg) is a monthly oral chewable tablet delivering broad-spectrum internal parasite prevention and treatment for large-breed dogs. Each tablet in this weight band contains 23 mg milbemycin oxime and 228 mg praziquantel, formulated for dogs weighing 50.1 to 100 lbs (approximately 22 to 45 kg). The product is approved for dogs and puppies from six weeks of age that have reached the minimum weight threshold for this variant.
Recommended for
Dogs and puppies weighing 50.1 to 100 lbs (22 to 45 kg) from 6 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, Interceptor Spectrum Tasty Chews 50-100 Lbs addresses the following indications:
- Heartworm prevention: Prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis, administered once monthly to intercept larval development before adult worms establish in the pulmonary vasculature.
- Roundworm treatment: Treatment and control of adult Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina infections residing in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Hookworm treatment: Treatment and control of adult Ancylostoma caninum infections; milbemycin oxime at 0.5 mg/kg achieved 99.6% reduction in adult hookworm counts in naturally infected dogs in FDA-submitted studies.
- Whipworm treatment: Treatment and control of adult Trichuris vulpis
- Tapeworm treatment: Treatment and control of adult Taenia pisiformis, Echinococcus multilocularis, and Echinococcus granulosus infections; praziquantel at 5 mg/kg achieved 100% efficacy against all three tapeworm species across independent controlled studies under NADA 141-338.
Key Benefits
The following clinical properties apply specifically to the 50.1 to 100 lbs dosing level of this formulation.
- Single-tablet broad coverage: One monthly chewable at 23 mg milbemycin oxime and 228 mg praziquantel addresses five parasite categories in large-breed dogs without requiring separate nematocidal and cestocidal products on differing schedules.
- Validated heartworm prevention: Six consecutive monthly doses achieved 100% prevention of adult immitis establishment in a pivotal FDA laboratory study, with zero adult worms recovered from all treated dogs at necropsy.
- Macrocyclic lactone mechanism: Milbemycin oxime selectively opens glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, producing irreversible paralysis in adult roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm populations without systemic toxicity at the labeled dose in dogs.
- Rapid cestocidal clearance: Praziquantel disrupts the tegumental integrity of tapeworm cells, increasing membrane permeability and inducing paralysis, with adult Taenia and Echinococcus species expelled from the gastrointestinal tract within hours of a single dose.
- Large-breed dose accuracy: The 50-100 lbs tablet delivers milbemycin oxime across a per-kilogram range of 0.23 to 0.46 mg/lb (0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg), maintaining the FDA-established minimum effective dose at both ends of this weight band without requiring tablet splitting.
- Chewable palatability at large doses: Despite the higher active ingredient load in this variant, field palatability data from 115 client-owned dogs of various sizes showed that 108 dogs accepted the chewable from the owner’s hand on the first offer, avoiding the need for manual pilling in large breeds.
- Dogs over 100 lbs: For dogs exceeding 100 lbs, the appropriate dose is achieved by combining two or more tablets from lower weight bands, as directed by a veterinarian; a single tablet sized above 100 lbs is not available in the current product line.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Not for human use. Keep out of reach of children. Wash hands after handling the tablet. Avoid direct eye contact. Do not store this product in proximity to food, beverages, or animal feed.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Administer orally only. This variant is labeled for dogs and puppies weighing 50.1 to 100 lbs (22 to 45 kg) from six weeks of age; do not administer to dogs below this weight threshold or below six weeks of age. Exercise caution in debilitated, aged, pregnant, or nursing animals and seek veterinary assessment prior to dosing in these cases. Isolated sensitivity reactions to milbemycin oxime or praziquantel have been recorded across study populations. Consult a veterinarian before concurrent administration with other antiparasitic drugs or any agents known to inhibit P-glycoprotein, which may elevate milbemycin oxime plasma concentrations.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your dog closely during the hours following each monthly administration, with particular attention to gait, activity level, and gastrointestinal function.
At the labeled dose, adverse reactions were absent from field palatability studies; the following signs have been identified across safety and efficacy studies conducted under NADA 141-338.
- Oral and gastrointestinal reactions: Vomiting was recorded across multiple laboratory cohorts at standard and supratherapeutic doses; in the field acceptability study, one dog vomited immediately after tablet acceptance at the labeled dose. Soft feces occurred at comparable rates in treated and control groups, indicating limited drug-attributable contribution at the standard dosing level.
- Neurological signs at elevated doses: Ataxia, decreased activity, salivation, and tremors emerged at 3 and 5 times the maximum labeled dose in repeat-dose safety studies, appearing within the first 24 hours and resolving spontaneously without medical intervention. In a puppy safety cohort dosed at 1x the label level, a single instance of ataxia was recorded in one animal.
- Isolated systemic findings: One dog in a tapeworm efficacy study exhibited abnormal leaning behavior within 24 hours of a standard labeled dose; this observation was not reproduced across any other study population involving this compound combination.
If any of these signs appear following administration at the labeled dose, contact a veterinarian without delay.
