Description
Revolution Topical Solution For Dogs 5.1-10 lbs (2.6-5 kg) is a selamectin-based spot-on parasiticide manufactured by Zoetis. Each purple-coded tube delivers 30 mg selamectin at a concentration of 120 mg/mL, calibrated for dogs in this weight band. It addresses flea infestation, heartworm prevention, and ear mite control through a single monthly topical application.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 5.1–10 lbs (2.6-5 kg), from 6 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, Revolution 5.1–10 lbs covers the following indications:
- Flea prevention and treatment: Kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month, interrupting the reproduction cycle at both adult and egg stages.
- Heartworm prevention: Prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis by eliminating L3 and L4 larvae deposited by mosquitoes within the prior month.
- Ear mite treatment: Treats ear mite (Otodectes cynotis) infestations; a second monthly dose may be required in some dogs.
- Sarcoptic mange treatment: Treats sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei); a second dose may be required, with clinical resolution observed in approximately 50% of dogs by day 30 after the first treatment.
- Tick control: Controls tick infestations caused by Dermacentor variabilis; in heavy infestations, a second dose may be administered two weeks after the first, with monthly dosing continuing thereafter.
Key Benefits
Revolution 5.1–10 lbs delivers clinically verified coverage across five parasite categories through a single monthly topical dose. The following attributes are drawn from the Zoetis product label:
- Minimum age 6 weeks: Selamectin at 30 mg/tube is labeled safe from 6 weeks of age, covering puppies at the weight boundary of 1 lbs before they reach the next weight band.
- Five-parasite coverage: One dose addresses fleas, heartworm larvae, ear mites, sarcoptic mange, and Dermacentor ticks, reducing the number of separate products required for full parasite control.
- Systemic distribution via transdermal absorption: Selamectin is absorbed through the skin and redistributed systemically, enabling activity against internal parasites such as immitis larvae without oral administration.
- Flea egg inhibition within one month: Revolution prevents flea egg hatching for a full month after application, halting reinfestation from environmental flea larvae before they reach adulthood.
- Tick control with supplemental dosing: In heavy variabilis infestations, a second dose administered two weeks after the initial application maintains control while monthly dosing resumes from that point forward.
- Ear mite resolution at monthly intervals: Clinical clearance of Otodectes cynotis occurs within one to two monthly doses, aligning ear mite treatment with the standard heartworm and flea prevention schedule.
- Topical format for dogs resistant to oral dosing: Application to the skin at the base of the neck eliminates the compliance issues associated with tablet refusal or incomplete ingestion.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Revolution may cause eye irritation and skin sensitivity on contact. Avoid touching treated areas until dry, wash hands thoroughly after handling, and keep the product out of reach of children. Do not use near food, food-prep surfaces, or open flame, as the formulation is flammable.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Revolution is formulated for external application only. This variant is labeled for dogs weighing 5.1–10 lbs (2.6-5 kg) from 6 weeks of age; do not use on dogs below the stated minimum weight or age. Dogs that are sick or debilitated should be assessed by a veterinarian before treatment. Individual sensitivity reactions have been documented in avermectin-sensitive collies; review breed susceptibility prior to administration. Do not use concurrently with other selamectin-containing or macrocyclic lactone products without veterinary guidance, as additive systemic exposure may occur.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your dog after the first application of Revolution and at each subsequent monthly dose. The following adverse reactions are documented in post-approval experience reported to the FDA/CVM:
Dermal reactions at the application site, including transient localized alopecia, erythema, pruritus, vesicles, blisters, and excoriations, have been reported and are generally self-limiting. Gastrointestinal signs encompass vomiting, loose stool or diarrhea, and hypersalivation. Systemic signs reported include lethargy, anorexia, generalized pruritus, seizures, ataxia, tremors, and dermatitis.
If any of these signs emerge or persist after application, contact a veterinarian promptly.
