Description
Simparica TRIO Chews for Dogs 11.1-22 lbs (5.1-10 kg) is a triple-active oral chewable manufactured by Zoetis, delivering 12 mg sarolaner, 0.24 mg moxidectin, and 50 mg pyrantel per tablet, covering the weight range where many dogs transition from adolescence into their adult size. Administered monthly, this product controls fleas, protects against six tick species, prevents heartworm disease by eliminating heartworm larvae, and treats or prevents infections caused by tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 11.1 to 22 lbs (5.1 to 10 kg) from 8 weeks of age and older.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs suffering from, or at risk of, mixed parasitic infections, Simparica TRIO provides coverage across the following conditions:
- Heartworm prevention: Prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis through elimination of susceptible L3/L4 larval stages.
- Flea treatment and prevention: Elimination of adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis); prevents re-establishment of flea infestations within the monthly dosing window.
- Tapeworm prevention: Prevents Dipylidium caninum infections as a direct consequence of eliminating Ctenocephalides felis vector fleas on the treated dog.
- Tick treatment and control: Treatment and control of infestations with Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), and Haemaphysalis longicornis (Asian longhorned tick).
- Lyme disease prevention: Prevents Borrelia burgdorferi infection as a direct result of eliminating Ixodes scapularis vector ticks on the treated dog.
- Roundworm treatment and control: Treatment and control of Toxocara canis (immature adults and adults) and Toxascaris leonina (adults).
- Hookworm treatment and control: Treatment and control of Ancylostoma caninum (L4 larvae, immature adults, and adults) and Uncinaria stenocephala (adults).
Key Benefits
The points below are drawn from the Zoetis product label and clinical study data applicable to dogs in the 11.1 to 22 lb weight band:
- Seven-parasite coverage: A single monthly tablet targets fleas, six tick species, heartworm larvae, intestinal roundworms, hookworms, and prevents tapeworm and Lyme disease transmission, removing the need to manage separate product schedules.
- Suitable from 8 weeks: Dogs as young as 8 weeks and weighing at least 11.1 lbs (5.1 kg) are eligible for this variant, allowing parasite prevention to begin at the point body weight enters this band.
- Fast-acting flea control: Laboratory data confirm Simparica TRIO begins eliminating fleas at 4 hours post-administration, achieving 100% kill at 8 hours, which limits the opportunity for flea egg deposition on the day of dosing.
- Month-long tick protection: Against scapularis, efficacy of at least 94.2% within 24 hours of infestation is maintained across the full 28-day dosing interval, reducing cumulative tick exposure between doses.
- Nematode clearance across life stages: Pyrantel pamoate functions as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker in susceptible nematodes, achieving clearance of hookworm at L4, immature adult, and adult stages, and roundworm at immature adult and adult stages, in a single administration.
- Lyme disease risk reduction: In two controlled laboratory studies, Simparica TRIO prevented Borrelia burgdorferi transmission following scapularis infestation at 28 days post-treatment, a clinically relevant outcome for dogs in tick-endemic areas.
- Oral delivery for coat-sensitive dogs: The flavored chewable bypasses topical application entirely, which benefits dogs in this weight range that are active, heavily coated, or that show aversion to spot-on handling.
- Flea egg suppression: Simparica TRIO eliminated fleas before egg deposition occurred for 35 consecutive days in a controlled study, reducing the accumulation of flea eggs in the household environment alongside on-animal treatment.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Keep out of reach of children. This product is formulated for oral administration to dogs; human ingestion requires immediate medical attention. Wash hands thoroughly after handling tablets and before any food contact. Avoid contact of tablet fragments with eyes or open skin.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Simparica TRIO is for oral use in dogs only; do not administer to cats or other species. This variant is not appropriate for dogs below 11.1 lbs (5.1 kg) or younger than 8 weeks of age. Sarolaner is an isoxazoline-class compound associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures; use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurological disorders. The safety of Simparica TRIO has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs; consult a veterinarian before administering to animals in these categories. Debilitated dogs or those receiving concurrent medications should be assessed by a veterinarian prior to use.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your dog after each administration of Simparica TRIO, giving particular attention to the first 24 to 48 hours following the initial dose.
The adverse reactions listed below were recorded across three field safety studies conducted by Zoetis; primary incidence figures are drawn from 272 dogs dosed monthly for up to 11 treatment cycles:
- Vomiting: Reported in 14.3% of treated dogs in the principal field study; the most frequently observed adverse reaction across all three studies and also noted in dogs concurrently treated for roundworms.
- Diarrhea: Recorded in 13.2% of treated dogs, with or without blood in post-approval reporting; incidence was higher among dogs that had active roundworm infections at the time of initial dosing.
- Lethargy: Observed in 8.5% of treated dogs; characteristically transient and self-limiting.
- Anorexia: Reported in 5.1% of treated dogs, at a frequency comparable to the active control group.
- Polyuria: Observed in 3.7% of treated dogs in the primary field study.
- Hyperactivity: Reported in 2.2% of Simparica TRIO-treated dogs versus 0.7% in the active control group.
- Seizures: Documented in one dog in a controlled laboratory study 16 days after administration; post-approval FDA/CVM data identify seizure as a known class-level risk for isoxazoline compounds.
- Muscle tremors and ataxia: Present in post-approval adverse drug experience reports submitted to FDA/CVM; reliable frequency estimates are not available from spontaneous reporting alone.
If any reaction persists or worsens following dosing, discontinue administration and contact a veterinarian.
