Description
Credelio Plus for Dogs 25.1-50 lbs (11-22 kg) combines 450 mg lotilaner and 16.88 mg milbemycin oxime in a single monthly chewable tablet, covering fleas, five tick species, heartworm larvae, and three intestinal nematode genera within one dose. This variant is calibrated for medium-breed dogs that have progressed beyond the 12.1–25 lbs band, delivering dual-active systemic parasite control without requiring co-administration of separate antiparasitic products.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 25.1–50 lbs (11–22 kg) from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, the following indications are covered by this variant:
- Flea treatment and prevention (Ctenocephalides felis, adults): lotilaner selectively inhibits insect GABA-gated chloride channels, producing systemic flea kill within hours of peak plasma concentration being reached.
- Flea allergy dermatitis prevention: continuous suppression of adult flea populations prevents the repeated cutaneous allergen exposure that drives flea allergy dermatitis in predisposed dogs.
- Tick treatment and prevention (Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes holocyclus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, adults): lotilaner reaches feeding ticks through systemic circulation following ingestion, disrupting neuromuscular function after attachment.
- Heartworm disease prevention (Dirofilaria immitis, L3/L4 larvae): milbemycin oxime eliminates infective larvae acquired during the preceding 30-day interval, sustaining prophylactic coverage when the dosing schedule is maintained.
- Roundworm treatment (Toxocara canis, immature adults and adults): milbemycin oxime impairs neuromuscular transmission in Toxocara canis at the dose established for this weight band, acting across immature and mature life stages.
- Hookworm treatment (Ancylostoma caninum, immature adults and adults): effective against both developmental stages of Ancylostoma caninum at the labeled monthly dose for dogs in this range.
- Whipworm treatment (Trichuris vulpis, adults): milbemycin oxime eliminates adult Trichuris vulpis as part of the standard monthly treatment cycle.
Key Benefits
The benefits below are drawn from labeled performance data for Credelio Plus for Dogs 25.1–50 lbs:
- Medium-breed entry point: Labeled from 25.1 lbs (11 kg) at 8 weeks of age, this tablet addresses the parasite control requirements of medium-breed dogs that have outgrown the 12.1–25 lbs variant.
- Integrated parasite coverage: One tablet per month eliminates the need for a separate heartworm preventive or intestinal dewormer by covering fleas, five tick species, Dirofilaria immitis larvae, and three nematode genera simultaneously.
- Bloodstream-mediated ectoparasiticide action: Lotilaner acts systemically after oral absorption, reaching ectoparasites through the bloodstream independently of coat length, density, or topical application technique.
- Rapid flea kill onset: Greater than 98% flea elimination is achieved within 12 hours of administration in fed dogs, reducing the flea burden on sensitised animals before a new infestation cycle takes hold.
- Monthly heartworm elimination: Each dose clears Dirofilaria immitis L3 and L4 larvae deposited during the preceding month, maintaining an uninterrupted prophylactic barrier when dogs are dosed on schedule.
- Multi-stage nematode activity: Milbemycin oxime acts against immature adults and adults of Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum, and against adults of Trichuris vulpis, covering the full spectrum of intestinal nematode burden relevant to medium-breed dogs.
- Oral chewable format: The flavored tablet eliminates the coat-parting and skin-contact requirements of spot-on application, making it appropriate for double-coated or dense-furred medium breeds where topical product placement is difficult to execute accurately.
- 30-day protection window: A single tablet sustains full coverage across all labeled indications for one calendar month, provided the interval between doses does not exceed 30 days.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Keep out of reach of children. Avoid ingestion and direct eye contact; if eye exposure occurs, rinse thoroughly with running water. Wash hands with soap and water after handling the product or administering it to the dog. Keep tablets away from food preparation areas and human food at all times.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Administer orally to dogs only; this product is not indicated for cats. This variant is labeled for dogs from 25.1 lbs (11 kg) at a minimum age of 8 weeks. Consult a veterinarian before use in debilitated, aged, pregnant, or lactating animals. Lotilaner is an isoxazoline-class compound; the FDA has associated this drug class with neurological adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures in some dogs. Dogs with a prior history of seizures or neurological conditions require veterinary assessment before administration. Rare individual sensitivity reactions have been reported. Use with caution when co-administering with P-glycoprotein substrate medications.
Possible Side Effects:
Monitor your dog after each administration of Credelio Plus 25.1–50 lbs, with heightened attention following the first dose in animals not previously exposed to lotilaner or milbemycin oxime.
Gastrointestinal reactions:
- Vomiting: The most frequently documented post-dose reaction across clinical trials; onset typically occurs within a few hours of administration and resolves without intervention in the majority of affected dogs.
- Diarrhea: Reported in a subset of subjects during clinical evaluation; self-limiting in most cases and does not require treatment discontinuation unless persistent or severe.
- Inappetence: A transient decrease in appetite has been observed in some dogs following the first dose, generally resolving within 24 hours.
Systemic reactions:
- Lethargy: Temporary reduction in activity documented post-administration; expected to resolve spontaneously within one day in uncomplicated cases.
- Pruritus: Skin irritation not attributable to active parasite infestation reported in a small proportion of subjects; spontaneous resolution is the typical outcome.
Neurological reactions (isoxazoline class alert):
- Tremors, ataxia, or seizures: The FDA has issued a safety communication covering the isoxazoline drug class, which includes lotilaner. These reactions are uncommon but documented in post-market surveillance; dogs with pre-existing neurological conditions carry disproportionately elevated risk.
Seek veterinary attention promptly if any adverse reaction persists, intensifies, or involves neurological signs after administration. For adverse event reporting, contact Elanco Animal Health directly.
