Description
Credelio Plus for Dogs 4.4-6 lbs (1.4-2.8 kg) delivers dual-active oral parasite control, combining lotilaner (an isoxazoline-class ectoparasiticide) with milbemycin oxime (a macrocyclic lactone endoparasiticide) in a single monthly chewable tablet. This variant is formulated specifically for the smallest weight band within the Credelio Plus range, providing age- and size-appropriate dosing from early puppyhood.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 4.4 to 6 lbs (1.4 to 2.8 kg) from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs weighing 4.4 to 6 lbs (1.4 to 2.8 kg) suffer from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, the following conditions are indicated:
- Flea treatment and prevention (Ctenocephalides felis, adults): lotilaner acts on the flea’s nervous system via GABA-gated chloride channel inhibition, killing adult fleas within hours of exposure.
- Tick treatment and prevention (Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes holocyclus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, adults): lotilaner achieves systemic tick kill following attachment and feeding initiation.
- Flea allergy dermatitis prevention: sustained flea kill interrupts the allergen exposure cycle that drives flea allergy dermatitis in sensitised dogs.
- Heartworm disease prevention (Dirofilaria immitis, L3/L4 larvae): milbemycin oxime eliminates infective larvae deposited by mosquitoes within the monthly dosing interval.
- Roundworm treatment (Toxocara canis, immature adults and adults): milbemycin oxime disrupts neuromuscular transmission in Toxocara canis across multiple life stages.
- Hookworm treatment (Ancylostoma caninum, immature adults and adults): active against immature and mature Ancylostoma caninum at the labeled dose.
- Whipworm treatment (Trichuris vulpis, adults): milbemycin oxime is effective against adult Trichuris vulpis at the standard monthly dose.
Key Benefits
The following benefits reflect labeled performance data for Credelio Plus for Dogs 4.4 to 6 lbs:
- Dual-active coverage: A single monthly chewable addresses both ectoparasites (fleas and ticks) and endoparasites (heartworm larvae, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm), eliminating the need for separate flea/tick and worming products.
- Suitable from 8 weeks: Labeled for use in puppies from 8 weeks of age weighing at least 4.4 lbs (1.4 kg), making it one of the earliest-start oral combination products in this weight class.
- Rapid flea kill onset: Lotilaner achieves greater than 98% flea kill within 12 hours of administration, reducing the burden on sensitised dogs before the next exposure cycle begins.
- Monthly heartworm protection: Milbemycin oxime eliminates Dirofilaria immitis L3 and L4 larvae acquired during the preceding month, maintaining continuous prophylactic coverage when dosed on schedule.
- Systemic mechanism: Both active compounds act systemically following oral absorption, meaning lotilaner reaches ectoparasites through the bloodstream rather than requiring direct contact with a topical residue on the coat.
- Chewable tablet formulation: The flavored chewable form is appropriate for dogs that resist spot-on application or whose coats make consistent topical delivery difficult; the tablet can be given directly or concealed in food.
- Broad intestinal worm spectrum: A single dose addresses three intestinal nematode genera (Toxocara, Ancylostoma, Trichuris) simultaneously, covering the most epidemiologically significant roundworm and hookworm species in U.S. dogs.
- 30-day duration per dose: Each tablet provides a full calendar month of protection across all labeled parasites when administered on a consistent schedule.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Keep out of reach of children. Avoid ingestion; wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the product or administering to the dog. In the event of eye contact, rinse immediately with water. Do not allow the product to contact food preparation surfaces or food intended for human consumption.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Credelio Plus is for oral administration in dogs only; do not administer to cats. This variant is indicated for dogs weighing 4.4 to 6 lbs (1.4 to 2.8 kg) from 8 weeks of age. Use with caution in dogs with a history of neurological conditions or seizures, as the isoxazoline class has been associated with neurological adverse reactions in some dogs; consult a veterinarian before administering to debilitated, aged, pregnant, or lactating animals. Rare individual sensitivity reactions may occur. Use with caution when co-administering with other drugs that are substrates of the P-glycoprotein transport system.
Possible Side Effects:
Monitor your dog after administration of Credelio Plus, particularly following the first dose. The following reactions have been reported, though they are uncommon at labeled doses:
Gastrointestinal reactions:
- Vomiting: The most frequently reported reaction; occurs most often within several hours of dosing and typically resolves without intervention.
- Diarrhea: Reported in a subset of clinical trial subjects; in most cases self-limiting and not requiring treatment cessation.
- Decreased appetite: Transient reduction in food intake observed in some dogs during the first dosing cycle.
Dermal and systemic reactions:
- Lethargy: Temporary reduction in activity level reported in some dogs following administration.
- Pruritus: Skin itching or scratching not attributable to ectoparasite infestation; resolves in most cases without intervention.
Neurological reactions (isoxazoline class alert):
- Tremors, ataxia, or seizures: The FDA issued an alert for the isoxazoline drug class, which includes lotilaner. These reactions are rare but have been documented across isoxazoline products. Dogs with a pre-existing seizure history carry elevated risk.
Consult a veterinarian promptly if any adverse reaction persists or worsens after administration.
