Description
Frontline Plus for Dogs 45–88 Lbs (20–40 Kg) combines 268 mg of fipronil with 241.20 mg of (S)-methoprene in a 2.68 ml spot-on pipette engineered for large-breed dogs. Fipronil, a phenylpyrazole compound, blocks GABA-gated chloride channels in the ectoparasite nervous system, producing uncontrolled neural activity and death on contact. (S)-methoprene mimics juvenile hormone in developing flea stages, rendering eggs nonviable and halting larval progression before pupation. Boehringer Ingelheim produces this formulation under identical manufacturing standards applied across all global markets.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 45 to 88 lbs (over 20 kg up to 40 kg), from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs weighing 45 to 88 lbs (over 20 kg up to 40 kg) suffer from, or at risk from, mixed ectoparasitic infestations:
- Treatment of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides spp.), adults: Fipronil eradicates adult fleas upon contact with treated skin and coat. Insecticidal activity against subsequent flea acquisition persists for eight weeks after a single application.
- Prevention of flea environmental contamination, eggs/larvae/pupae: (S)-methoprene either penetrates the shell of newly deposited flea eggs or absorbs through adult flea cuticle, suppressing every immature developmental stage for eight weeks and reducing the flea burden in household surroundings.
- Treatment of tick infestations (Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, Ixodes scapularis): A single application controls all life stages of ticks. Attachment of individual ticks remains possible, and transmission of tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, haemobartonellosis, and anaplasmosis , cannot be entirely ruled out under unfavorable conditions.
- Treatment of biting lice infestations (Trichodectes canis), adults: Fipronil disrupts pre- and post-synaptic chloride ion transfer in the louse nervous system, inducing rapid paralysis and elimination within 48 hours.
Key Benefits
The following properties characterize this large-breed formulation:
- Large-breed suitability: The 2.68 ml pipette accommodates dogs over 20 kg up to 40 kg, covering breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, and German Shepherds at typical adult weight.
- Combined adulticidal and ovicidal action: Fipronil eliminates mature ectoparasites on contact while (S)-methoprene independently disrupts the flea reproductive cycle at the egg, larval, and pupal stages, targeting two biologically distinct phases simultaneously.
- Non-systemic contact exposure: Fipronil distributes across the skin and hair coat through natural sebaceous lipid migration. Parasites are killed upon physical contact with treated surfaces, without the requirement of a blood meal from the host.
- Flea kill within 24 hours: Adult fleas contacting treated skin or coat are eliminated within 24 hours. Ticks and biting lice are killed within 48 hours of exposure.
- Eight-week reproductive suppression: A single dose prevents viable flea offspring from maturing in carpets, bedding, kennels, and other resting surfaces for up to eight weeks, substantially curbing reinfestation from the household environment.
- Monthly tick coverage: Acaricidal protection against the four labeled tick species spans the full four-week dosing interval, aligning with the standard monthly retreatment schedule.
- Topical alternative to oral dosing: Spot-on delivery avoids gastrointestinal transit entirely, offering a practical option for dogs that consistently refuse chewable tablets or experience vomiting following oral administration.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
This product causes irritation to mucous membranes, skin, and eyes on contact. Do not allow the solution to reach the mouth, exposed skin, or eyes during handling. If swallowed accidentally, obtain medical assistance without delay and show the product leaflet to the treating physician. Wash hands with soap and water immediately after use. Refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking throughout the application process. Treated dogs should not be handled by children until the application site has dried thoroughly.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Frontline Plus is intended solely for external topical application. Do not administer to puppies below 8 weeks of age or to dogs that are sick, running a fever, or recuperating from illness. This formulation is species-specific to dogs; applying it to cats, ferrets, or rabbits introduces a serious overdosing risk, with documented fatal outcomes in rabbits. Dogs or handlers with established hypersensitivity to insecticide compounds or alcohol-based carriers should avoid all contact with the product. Seek veterinary guidance before treating debilitated, elderly, pregnant, or nursing animals. Concurrent application of other topical flea products directly onto the animal is contraindicated, as safety data for combined use does not exist.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your dog after every application for any deviation in behavior, appetite, or skin condition at and beyond the treated area. Post-market surveillance classifies adverse reactions to Frontline Plus as very rare.
Documented reactions organized by body system include:
- Dermal reactions: Transient changes at the application site, including skin discoloration, localized hair loss, pruritus, and erythema. On rare occasions, generalized itching or hair thinning in areas remote from the treated site has been reported.
- Gastrointestinal signs: Excessive salivation may develop briefly if the dog manages to lick the application site while still wet, primarily attributable to the carrier excipient rather than active ingredient toxicity. Vomiting has been noted infrequently.
- Systemic signs: In very rare instances, reversible neurological responses have been observed, including increased sensitivity to external stimuli, depressed behavior, and mild respiratory changes. These signs generally resolve spontaneously without veterinary intervention.
Should any adverse reaction persist beyond 48 hours or escalate in severity, discontinue use and contact a veterinarian. Adverse event reports can be submitted to Boehringer Ingelheim’s veterinary pharmacovigilance department.
