Description
Frontline Plus for Dogs Up to 22 Lbs (Up to 10 Kg) is a topical spot-on containing fipronil (67 mg) and (S)-methoprene (60.3 mg), manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. Fipronil belongs to the phenylpyrazole family and eliminates adult fleas within 24 hours and ticks within 48 hours through contact exposure. (S)-methoprene functions as an insect growth regulator (IGR) that halts flea egg hatching and larval development, breaking the reproductive cycle for up to eight weeks per application. Each 0.67 ml pipette is calibrated specifically for dogs in the 2 to 10 kg range.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing up to 22 lbs (up to 10 kg), from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs weighing up to 22 lbs (up to 10 kg) suffer from, or at risk from, mixed ectoparasitic infestations:
- Treatment of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides spp.): Kills adult fleas on contact. Insecticidal activity against newly arriving adult fleas persists for eight weeks after a single application.
- Ovicidal and larvicidal activity: (S)-methoprene inhibits the development of flea eggs, larvae, and pupae deposited by adult fleas, preventing environmental contamination for eight weeks.
- Treatment of tick infestations (Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, Ixodes scapularis): A single application controls all life stages of ticks. Attachment of individual ticks remains possible, and transmission of tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, haemobartonellosis, and anaplasmosis , cannot be entirely ruled out under unfavorable conditions.
- Treatment of biting lice infestations (Trichodectes canis): Fipronil eliminates chewing lice through direct neurotoxic action.
Key Benefits
The following attributes distinguish this formulation within the Frontline Plus product line:
- Puppy-safe from 8 weeks: Approved for use in puppies from 8 weeks of age, with this pipette variant suitable for dogs weighing 2 kg or more.
- Dual-compound action: Fipronil kills adult ectoparasites on contact, while (S)-methoprene disrupts the flea lifecycle at the egg, larval, and pupal stages simultaneously.
- Contact-based mechanism: Parasites do not need to bite the dog to be exposed. Fipronil distributes across the skin surface and hair coat via lipid redistribution, reaching fleas and ticks through direct contact.
- Onset within 24 hours for fleas: Fipronil achieves flea kill within 24 hours of contact. Ticks and lice are eliminated within 48 hours.
- Monthly protection, eight-week flea coverage: A single application provides acaricidal protection for four weeks against ticks and insecticidal activity against adult fleas for up to eight weeks.
- Lifecycle interruption: (S)-methoprene prevents viable flea offspring from maturing in the dog’s environment, reducing reinfestation pressure from carpets, bedding, and resting areas.
- Topical format for dogs that refuse oral medication: Spot-on application bypasses the gastrointestinal tract entirely, making it suitable for dogs that spit out or vomit oral chewables.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
This product can irritate mucous membranes, skin, and eyes. Avoid contact with the mouth, skin, and eyes during application. If accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately and present the package leaflet to the physician. Wash hands with soap and water after use, and do not smoke, eat, or drink during application. Keep treated animals away from children until the application site has dried completely.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Frontline Plus is for external use only. Do not apply to puppies under 8 weeks of age or to sick, febrile, or convalescent animals. Do not use this dog formulation on cats, ferrets, or rabbits, as species-inappropriate dosing can cause severe adverse reactions, including mortality in rabbits. Animals or operators with known hypersensitivity to insecticides or alcohol should avoid contact with this product. If your dog is debilitated, aged, pregnant, or nursing, consult a veterinarian before application. Do not use simultaneously with other topical flea products applied directly to the animal.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your dog after each application for any changes in behavior or skin condition. Adverse reactions to Frontline Plus are uncommon but documented.
The following reactions have been reported:
- Dermal reactions: Transient skin changes at the application site, including localized discoloration, temporary hair loss, redness, and itching. Generalized itching or hair loss away from the application area has also been observed on rare occasions.
- Gastrointestinal signs: Excessive salivation may occur if the dog licks the application site, primarily due to the taste of the carrier solution. Vomiting has been reported infrequently.
- Systemic signs: Reversible neurological responses, including heightened sensitivity to stimulation, depression, and respiratory symptoms, have been documented in very rare cases. These signs typically resolve without intervention.
If side effects persist or worsen, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian. Contact Boehringer Ingelheim’s veterinary support line for adverse event reporting.
