Description
Bravecto Spot-On for Cats (112.5 mg fluralaner) is a topical isoxazoline applied once every 12 weeks for sustained flea and tick control. A single tube delivers systemic fluralaner at a minimum dose of 40 mg/kg body weight, achieving flea kill within 8 hours of treatment.
Recommended for: Cats and kittens weighing 2.6 to 6.2 lbs (1.2 to 2.8 kg) from 6 months of age.
Indication/Coverage
For cats suffering from, or at risk from, parasitic infestations involving fleas and ticks:
- Flea treatment and prevention: Kills adult Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea) and prevents reinfestation; reduces live flea counts by over 98% within 12 hours of application, sustained for 12 weeks.
- Black-legged tick control: Treatment and control of Ixodes scapularis infestations, with over 94% effectiveness 48 hours post-infestation for 12 weeks.
- Asian longhorned tick control: Treatment and control of Haemaphysalis longicornis infestations, with over 94% effectiveness for 12 weeks.
- American dog tick control: Treatment and control of Dermacentor variabilis infestations, with over 98% effectiveness for 8 weeks post-dosing. Efficacy against this species is not maintained beyond 8 weeks.
Key Benefits
The following properties distinguish the clinical profile of Bravecto Spot-On for cats in the 2.6 to 6.2 lb weight range:
- Small cat suitability: Approved for cats and kittens from 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg) and 6 months of age, making it one of the few isoxazoline spot-on formulations with labeled use at this weight threshold.
- Broad ectoparasite coverage: A single dose addresses three tick species (I. scapularis, H. longicornis, D. variabilis) alongside C. felis fleas, covering the primary ectoparasites of concern for cats in U.S. regions.
- Systemic mechanism: Fluralaner is absorbed through the skin into systemic circulation and reaches peak plasma concentration between 7 and 21 days post-application; fleas and ticks ingest the compound during feeding rather than through contact with the coat.
- Rapid flea kill: Laboratory data show 100% flea kill at 8 hours post-treatment and over 98% reduction in live flea counts within 12 hours, including after re-infestation across the dosing interval.
- Extended dosing interval: One tube every 12 weeks replaces the monthly topical schedule required by most alternative flea products, reducing the frequency of handling for cats that are difficult to treat.
- Flea allergy dermatitis resolution: In field studies, sustained flea elimination led to documented improvement in erythema, alopecia, papules, scales, crusts and excoriation associated with flea allergy dermatitis.
- Topical format for medication-resistant cats: The spot-on application bypasses the palatability and dosing compliance issues that arise with oral or chewable formulations in cats that consistently refuse oral medication.
- Year-round dosing compatibility: Treatment may begin at any point in the calendar year and continue without interruption, with no seasonal restriction on initiation.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Keep out of reach of children; store in original packaging to prevent accidental access. Avoid skin and eye contact during application; if eye exposure occurs, flush slowly with water and seek immediate medical advice if contact lenses are worn. Wash hands and any contacted skin with soap and water after use. This product is highly flammable; keep away from heat sources, open flame, and sparks. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling. Children should not contact the application site for at least 2 hours after dosing.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
For topical use only; oral ingestion should be avoided. This product is indicated for cats and kittens from 6 months of age and weighing 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg) or more. Safety has not been established in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats; consult a veterinarian before use in these animals. Fluralaner belongs to the isoxazoline class, which has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures in cats, including those without prior neurologic history. Use with caution in cats with a history of neurologic disorders.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your cat for at least 48 hours following spot-on application, particularly after the first dose.
The following adverse reactions were recorded in clinical studies and post-approval reporting for the isoxazoline class (fluralaner):
- Application site reactions: Greasy, oily, or wet appearance at the application site is commonly observed; matting, clumping, or spiking of hair in the treated area was noted in safety studies at up to 5x the labeled dose.
- Gastrointestinal signs: Vomiting occurred in 7.6% of cats in the U.S. field study (n=224); diarrhea was reported in 4.9% and decreased appetite in 3.6% of treated cats over the 105-day study period.
- Dermal reactions: Pruritus affected 5.4% of fluralaner-treated cats in the field study; alopecia was reported in 4.9%, and scabs or ulcerated lesions in 2.2%.
- Systemic and neurologic signs: Ataxia was observed in two cats during field studies; post-approval reports include muscle tremors, hypersalivation, lethargy, behavioral changes (including hyperactivity, hiding, and vocalization), and generalized pruritus.
If any of these signs develop or do not resolve within 72 hours after application, consult a veterinarian.
