Description
Revolution Plus Topical Solution for Cats 2.8-5.5 lbs (1.25-2.5 kg) is a dual-active spot-on formulation combining 15 mg selamectin (a macrocyclic lactone) and 2.5 mg sarolaner (an isoxazoline), manufactured by Zoetis. A single monthly application delivers simultaneous coverage against fleas, ticks, heartworm, ear mites, and intestinal nematodes. No oral administration is required, making it suitable for cats that resist tablet or chewable formats.
Recommended for
Cats and kittens weighing 2.8–5.5 lbs (1.25–2.5 kg) from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For cats suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, Revolution Plus 2.8–5.5 lbs addresses the following indications:
- Flea treatment and prevention (Ctenocephalides felis, adults): Kills adult fleas on the treated cat and interrupts environmental infestation by eliminating adults before egg deposition.
- Tick treatment and control (Ixodes scapularis, Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis): Sarolaner acts systemically to kill attached ticks; coverage spans four clinically significant tick species.
- Heartworm prevention (Dirofilaria immitis, L3/L4 larvae and immature adults): Selamectin eliminates infective larvae acquired within one month of the dose and clears immature adult stages following initial exposure.
- Roundworm treatment (Toxocara cati, intestinal adults): A single topical dose clears established intestinal roundworm infections; monthly application maintains control.
- Intestinal hookworm treatment (Ancylostoma tubaeforme, intestinal adults): Selamectin eliminates intestinal hookworm infections with a single dose; ongoing monthly use sustains protection.
- Ear mite treatment (Otodectes cynotis, adults): Applied as a single topical dose at the base of the neck, not directly into the ear canal; monthly use suppresses subsequent infestations.
- Tapeworm prevention (Dipylidium caninum): Indirect prevention achieved by eliminating Ctenocephalides felis vector fleas on the treated cat, removing the primary transmission route for caninum.
Key Benefits
Revolution Plus 2.8–5.5 lbs delivers the following clinically relevant properties for small cats and kittens at the lower weight range:
- Suitable from 8 weeks: The labeled minimum age of 8 weeks makes this variant appropriate for kittens at the start of the standard preventive schedule, covering the period when maternal immunity begins to wane.
- Seven-parasite coverage: A single pipette addresses fleas, four tick species, heartworm larvae, roundworm, hookworm, ear mites, and tapeworm (indirectly), reducing the need for multiple concurrent products.
- Dual-class mechanism: Selamectin disrupts neurotransmission in parasites by interfering with glutamate-gated chloride channel conductance, while sarolaner (an isoxazoline) blocks GABA- and glutamate-gated chloride channels. These complementary mechanisms provide broad-spectrum activity against both ectoparasites and endoparasites.
- Flea kill before egg-laying: Adult fleas on the treated cat are killed prior to egg deposition, limiting environmental contamination and reducing re-infestation pressure.
- Monthly heartworm clearance: Each monthly dose eliminates larval stages acquired during the preceding 30 days, maintaining a continuous barrier against Dirofilaria immitis progression to adult infection.
- Topical format: Application to the skin at the base of the neck bypasses the digestive tract entirely, which is an advantage for cats that refuse oral medications or display food-associated aversion to tablet administration.
- Water resistance after 24 hours: Bathing or shampooing the treated cat fewer than 24 hours after application reduces the effectiveness of selamectin; once absorbed, the formulation remains effective despite subsequent water exposure.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Revolution Plus contains isopropyl alcohol and the preservative butylhydroxytoluene, which are irritating to skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Avoid eye contact; if contact occurs, flush copiously with water. Keep children away from the application site for 4 hours post-treatment and store all doses out of their reach.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Revolution Plus 2.8–5.5 lbs is for external use on cats only; do not administer to dogs or other species. This variant is labeled for cats and kittens weighing 2.8–5.5 lbs (1.25–2.5 kg) from 8 weeks of age. Safety in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats has not been established; consult a veterinarian before use in these animals. Sarolaner belongs to the isoxazoline class, which has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures, particularly in cats with a history of neurologic disorders; assess individual risk before initiating treatment.
Possible Side Effects:
Monitor your cat closely following the first application and for several hours thereafter. Known adverse reactions reported in clinical trials and post-market surveillance include:
- Application site reactions (selamectin, topical): Transient stiff hair, clumping, discoloration, or a slight powdery residue at the treatment site. These effects are temporary and do not compromise the safety or efficacy of the dose.
- Dermal irritation (sarolaner, topical): Itching, redness, or skin sensitivity at or near the application site. Effects are typically self-limiting and resolve without intervention.
- Gastrointestinal signs: Hypersalivation or vomiting may occur, particularly if the cat grooms the application site before the product has dried. Prevent licking until the product has completely dried.
- Neurologic signs (isoxazoline class): Tremors, ataxia, or seizure activity have been reported in cats receiving isoxazoline-class compounds, including those without a prior history of neurologic disorders. Cease use and contact a veterinarian immediately if any of these signs appear.
If adverse reactions persist or worsen, consult a veterinarian or contact Zoetis.
