Description
Revolution for Cats 5.1–15 lbs (2.6–7.5 kg) contains 45 mg selamectin per tube (60 mg/mL), manufactured by Zoetis as a topical spot-on solution covering the core parasite risks in adult and adolescent cats across this weight range.
Recommended for
Cats weighing 5.1–15 lbs (2.6–7.5 kg) from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For cats suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, Revolution for Cats 5.1–15 lbs addresses the following conditions:
- Flea treatment and prevention (adults): Kills adult Ctenocephalides felis and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month, disrupting the flea life cycle at both the adult feeding stage and the reproductive stage.
- Flea infestation control: Eliminates viable eggs deposited by adult fleas present on the animal at the time of treatment, reducing the environmental flea population over the dosing period.
- Heartworm prevention (L3/L4 larvae): Prevents Dirofilaria immitis infection by clearing infective larvae acquired from mosquitoes within one month prior to and one month following each application.
- Ear mite treatment (adults): Treats active Otodectes cynotis infestations with a single topical dose; a second monthly dose is indicated where the infestation persists after the initial application.
- Roundworm treatment (adults): Treats intestinal Toxocara cati as a single topical dose.
- Hookworm treatment (adults): Treats Ancylostoma tubaeforme infections as a single topical dose.
Key Benefits
Revolution for Cats 5.1–15 lbs delivers the following clinically relevant properties at this weight range:
- Adult cat coverage: Labeled from 8 weeks of age and across the 2.6–7.5 kg range, this variant covers the majority of the adult domestic cat population by body weight.
- Six-parasite resolution: One monthly application concurrently addresses adult fleas, flea eggs, heartworm larvae, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms without requiring additional products to be administered separately.
- Transdermal systemic absorption: Selamectin absorbs through the skin into systemic circulation and redistributes to sebaceous glands, enabling activity against both surface ectoparasites and internal endoparasites from a single application point.
- Flea kill within 36 hours: Clinical field studies demonstrated greater than 98% flea kill within 36 hours of the first dose, with sustained control of flea infestations above 90% through day 30.
- Monthly larval clearance: Each dose eliminates immitis L3 and L4 larvae acquired during the preceding 30 days, maintaining continuous heartworm protection when doses are administered on schedule.
- Single-dose ear mite resolution: One application clears most Otodectes cynotis infestations; the label provides for a second dose only in cases of incomplete resolution after the first treatment.
- Spot-on for cats resistant to oral dosing: Topical delivery bypasses swallowing compliance and palatability refusal that frequently prevent full oral dose delivery in cats.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Revolution contains selamectin in an isopropyl alcohol base. Avoid ingestion, eye contact, and prolonged skin or clothing contact. Wash hands with soap and water after handling. Keep out of reach of children and away from food, food preparation surfaces, and open containers.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
For external use only in cats. Do not administer orally. This variant is approved for cats from 8 weeks of age weighing 5.1–15 lbs (2.6–7.5 kg); cats below 5.1 lbs should use the appropriate lower weight-band variant. Debilitated, aged, cats require veterinary assessment before use. Individual sensitivity has been documented at the labeled dose in a small number of cats. Concurrent use with other medications has not been fully evaluated; obtain veterinary clearance before combining Revolution with additional treatments.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your cat after each application, with particular attention following the first dose.
Selamectin (macrocyclic lactone class) may produce the following adverse reactions in cats, reported in decreasing order of frequency per post-approval experience submitted to FDA/CVM:
- Application site reactions: Transient hair loss at the application site, with or without localized inflammation, has been documented; affected areas resolve without intervention in the majority of cases.
- Gastrointestinal signs: Vomiting, diarrhea, loose stool, and anorexia have been reported in post-approval submissions for cats receiving selamectin.
- Systemic signs: Lethargy, salivation, generalized pruritus, ataxia, fever, generalized alopecia, tremors, hypersalivation, dermatitis, and seizures appear in post-approval reporting; these signs were transient in most documented cases.
- Pre-approval clinical observations: Transient localized alopecia was observed in approximately 1% of treated cats across controlled clinical trials conducted prior to FDA approval.
