Description
Simparica TRIO Chews for Dogs 22.1–44 lbs (10.1–20 kg) is a chewable combination parasiticide manufactured by Zoetis. Each tablet contains 24 mg sarolaner, 0.48 mg moxidectin, and 100 mg pyrantel, delivering broad-spectrum parasite control for dogs within the specified weight range. Monthly administration is effective against flea infestations, six tick species, developing heartworm larvae, and gastrointestinal nematodes, including roundworms and hookworms.
Recommended for
Dogs weighing 22.1 to 44 lbs (10.1 to 20 kg) from 8 weeks of age and older.
Indication/Coverage
For dogs suffering from, or at risk of, mixed parasitic infections, Simparica TRIO extends coverage across the following conditions:
- Heartworm prevention: Prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis through elimination of susceptible L3/L4 larval stages..
- Flea treatment and prevention: Elimination of adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis); prevents re-establishment of flea infestations throughout the monthly dosing cycle.
- Tapeworm prevention: Prevents Dipylidium caninum infections as a direct result of eliminating Ctenocephalides felis vector fleas on the treated dog.
- Tick treatment and control: Treatment and control of infestations with Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), and Haemaphysalis longicornis (Asian longhorned tick).
- Lyme disease prevention: Prevents Borrelia burgdorferi infection as a direct result of eliminating Ixodes scapularis vector ticks on the treated dog.
- Roundworm treatment and control: Treatment and control of Toxocara canis (immature adults and adults) and Toxascaris leonina (adults).
- Hookworm treatment and control: Treatment and control of Ancylostoma caninum (L4 larvae, immature adults, and adults) and Uncinaria stenocephala (adults).
Key Benefits
The following characteristics are established by the Zoetis product label and supporting clinical data for dogs in the 22.1 to 44 lb weight band:
- Consolidated monthly coverage: A single tablet per month addresses fleas, six tick species, heartworm larvae, intestinal roundworms, hookworms, tapeworm prevention, and Lyme disease risk, consolidating what would otherwise require multiple products on separate schedules.
- Approved from 8 weeks: Dogs as young as 8 weeks and weighing at least 22.1 lbs (10.1 kg) are eligible, ensuring prevention can begin as soon as body weight enters this band without waiting for further maturation.
- Early flea kill onset: Simparica TRIO begins eliminating adult fleas at 4 hours post-dosing and achieves 100% efficacy at 8 hours, curtailing flea egg production on the day of administration.
- Full-interval tick control: Against scapularis, the product reduces live tick burden by at least 94.2% within 24 hours of re-infestation and sustains this level of efficacy across the 28-day dosing interval, limiting cumulative pathogen exposure between monthly doses.
- Hookworm clearance across three life stages: Pyrantel pamoate acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker in susceptible nematodes, achieving documented clearance of caninum at L4, immature adult, and adult stages within a single treatment cycle.
- Vector-borne disease interruption: Two controlled laboratory studies confirmed that Simparica TRIO prevented Borrelia burgdorferi transmission following scapularis infestation at 28 days post-treatment, a meaningful outcome for medium-sized dogs with outdoor or trail access.
- Oral route for active dogs: Medium-sized dogs in this weight range are frequently bathed, swim regularly, or are physically active outdoors; the oral chewable format maintains full efficacy regardless of water exposure or coat condition.
- Environmental flea burden reduction: In a controlled study, Simparica TRIO eliminated fleas before egg deposition occurred for 35 consecutive days, limiting the accumulation of viable flea eggs in the home between monthly doses.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Keep out of reach of children. Simparica TRIO is formulated for oral administration to dogs; accidental human ingestion requires immediate medical attention. Wash hands after handling tablets and prior to any food contact. Do not transfer tablet fragments to eyes or open skin.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Simparica TRIO is for oral use in dogs only; do not administer to cats or other species. This variant is not appropriate for dogs below 22.1 lbs (10.1 kg) or younger than 8 weeks of age. Sarolaner is an isoxazoline-class compound associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures; use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurological disorders. The safety of Simparica TRIO has not been established in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs; consult a veterinarian before use in these animals. Dogs that are debilitated or on concurrent medications should be evaluated by a veterinarian before administration.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your dog closely following each Simparica TRIO administration, with heightened attention during the 24 to 48 hours after the first dose.
The adverse reactions below were documented across three field safety studies conducted by Zoetis; incidence figures are drawn from the primary study of 272 dogs receiving monthly treatment for up to 11 cycles:
- Vomiting: Reported in 14.3% of treated dogs in the principal study; consistently the most frequently recorded reaction across all three field studies, including those involving dogs with active flea and roundworm burdens.
- Diarrhea: Observed in 13.2% of treated dogs, with or without blood in post-approval reporting; rates were elevated in dogs carrying concurrent roundworm infections at the time of first administration.
- Lethargy: Recorded in 8.5% of treated dogs; typically transient and resolving without intervention.
- Anorexia: Reported in 5.1% of treated dogs, at a frequency consistent with the active control group.
- Polyuria: Observed in 3.7% of treated dogs within the primary field study population.
- Hyperactivity: Reported in 2.2% of Simparica TRIO-treated dogs, compared to 0.7% in the active control group.
- Seizures: Confirmed in one dog in a controlled laboratory study 16 days after dosing; post-approval FDA/CVM adverse event data identify seizure as a class-level risk for all isoxazoline compounds.
- Muscle tremors and ataxia: Recorded in post-approval adverse drug experience reports filed with FDA/CVM; reliable incidence estimates cannot be derived from spontaneous post-market reporting alone.
If any of these signs emerge or worsen after dosing, stop administration and contact a veterinarian.
