Description
Revolution Plus Topical Solution for Cats 11.1-22 lbs (5.1-10 kg) is the green-cap variant of the selamectin/sarolaner combination, formulated by Zoetis to deliver selamectin 60 mg and sarolaner 10 mg per pipette across the 5.1–10 kg body weight range. A single monthly application covers seven parasite categories without requiring oral administration, which is a clinically relevant distinction for larger cats that are difficult to medicate by mouth. This is the highest single-pipette weight band in the Revolution Plus range; cats exceeding 22 lbs require a combination of two tubes.
Recommended for
Cats and kittens weighing 11.1–22 lbs (5.1–10 kg) from 8 weeks of age.
Indication/Coverage
For cats suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections, Revolution Plus 11.1–22 lbs covers the following indications:
- Flea treatment and prevention (Ctenocephalides felis, adults): Kills adult fleas on the treated cat prior to egg deposition, interrupting the reproductive cycle and reducing the household environmental flea reservoir.
- Tick treatment and control (Ixodes scapularis, Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, adults): Sarolaner reaches systemic circulation after dermal absorption and kills attached ticks across four North American species of clinical significance.
- Heartworm prevention (Dirofilaria immitis, L3/L4 larvae and immature adults): Monthly selamectin dosing eliminates infective larvae acquired within the preceding 30 days and clears immature adult stages that developed following the initial larval exposure.
- Roundworm treatment (Toxocara cati, intestinal adults): A single dose of selamectin at this concentration clears established intestinal roundworm infections; monthly continuation prevents reacquisition.
- Intestinal hookworm treatment (Ancylostoma tubaeforme, intestinal adults): Selamectin eliminates intestinal hookworm infections following a single application; ongoing monthly treatment suppresses reinfection.
- Ear mite treatment (Otodectes cynotis, adults): Administered as a single topical dose to the skin at the base of the neck, not directly into the ear canal; monthly application thereafter controls recurrence.
- Tapeworm prevention (Dipylidium caninum): Indirect prevention through elimination of Ctenocephalides felis vector fleas on the treated cat, severing the primary transmission pathway for caninum infection.
Key Benefits
The properties listed below are drawn from the Revolution Plus prescribing information and are specific to the green-cap 11.1–22 lbs dosing tier:
- Appropriate from 8 weeks: The labeled minimum age of 8 weeks applies to this weight band, though cats in the 11.1–22 lbs range are typically adult; the age floor ensures continuity of coverage if a large-breed kitten reaches this weight band before 6 months.
- Seven-parasite single application: One green-cap pipette addresses fleas, four tick species, heartworm larvae, roundworm, hookworm, ear mites, and tapeworm (via flea control) within a single monthly treatment cycle.
- Highest single-tube selamectin dose: At 60 mg selamectin and 10 mg sarolaner per tube, this variant delivers the full labeled therapeutic concentration for cats up to 10 kg without requiring a combination of two pipettes.
- Dual-class mechanism: Selamectin disrupts neurotransmission in parasites by interfering with glutamate-gated chloride channel conductance, while sarolaner (an isoxazoline) blocks GABA- and glutamate-gated chloride channels. These complementary mechanisms provide broad-spectrum activity against both ectoparasites and endoparasites.
- Flea kill ahead of oviposition: Adult fleas on the treated cat are eliminated before egg deposition, curtailing environmental contamination from the reproductive stage of the flea life cycle.
- Uninterrupted heartworm barrier: Each monthly green-cap dose covers the full 30-day interval, preventing larval progression to adult heartworm provided the schedule is maintained without gaps exceeding one month.
- Topical route for difficult-to-medicate cats: Dermal absorption at the scruff bypasses the gastrointestinal tract entirely, making this the preferred format for large cats that refuse tablets, chewables, or oral suspensions.
Caution
Hazards to Humans
Revolution Plus contains isopropyl alcohol and butylhydroxytoluene, both of which cause skin and eye irritation on contact. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after handling. If the product contacts the eyes, flush copiously with water. Keep children away from the treated cat for 4 hours post-application and store all pipettes out of their reach.
Hazards to Domestic Animals
Revolution Plus 11.1–22 lbs is for external use on cats only; do not apply to dogs or any other species. This variant is labeled for cats weighing 11.1–22 lbs (5.1–10 kg) from 8 weeks of age. Safety has not been established in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats; obtain veterinary clearance before using them in these animals. Sarolaner is an isoxazoline-class compound associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including tremors, ataxia, and seizures, reported in cats both with and without a prior neurologic history; individual risk assessment by a veterinarian is warranted before the first dose.
Possible Side Effects
Monitor your cat for at least 2 hours after applying the green-cap pipette, with continued observation through the remainder of the treatment day.
- Application site reactions (selamectin, topical): Transient hair stiffness, clumping, color change, or a faint powdery residue at the base of the neck may develop as the product dries. These localized changes are self-limiting and do not affect systemic drug delivery or efficacy.
- Dermal irritation (sarolaner, topical): Pruritus, localized erythema, or skin sensitivity at or immediately surrounding the application site has been reported in a subset of treated cats. Signs typically resolve without clinical intervention within 24 to 48 hours.
- Gastrointestinal signs: Hypersalivation or vomiting may occur if the cat licks the treatment site before the product has fully absorbed. Licking of the treated area should be prevented until the product has dried completely.
- Neurologic signs (isoxazoline class): Tremors, ataxia, or seizure activity are recognized adverse effects of sarolaner in susceptible individuals, including cats without a documented neurologic history. Discontinue use immediately and seek veterinary attention without delay if any of these signs develop.
